Am I really guaranteed coverage regardless of my medical history?
Yes. You and your family members are guaranteed the Essential or Essential Plus health plan regardless of pre-existing health conditions and the health of your dependents. Always contact our office to let us know if there are any changes to your employment status, hours worked, or family composition.
a. If you leave the hospital and continue to work in another hospital without access to benefits, you may be able to keep all your coverage provided you still meet the eligibility requirements.
b. If you leave the hospital and work in a different industry, you can keep your health and dental coverage, but if you have Life, LTD, and AD&D, it will need to be terminated.
c. You may even be able to keep your coverage if you move to another province. Please contact our office to discuss.

I am a temporary part-time employee; does HCP have anything for me?
Definitely. Regardless of hours worked in a week, you are eligible to apply for our Standard Package, which offers a variety of health and dental plan options.
-
I have health and dental benefits through my spouse’s group plan. Is there anything in this plan for me?
Even if you’re covered under your spouse’s plan, there are still good reasons to consider HCP:
Coordinate Benefits
With dual coverage, HCP can cover what your spouse’s plan doesn’t, potentially resulting in near 100% reimbursement on eligible expenses.
LTD Coverage
Your spouse’s plan will not cover your income if you become disabled. HCP’s LTD is income replacement should you be unable to work due to sickness or an accident.
-
If I enroll in a plan that includes basic life insurance, long term disability and accidental death, disease and dismemberment benefits, what happens when I reach age 65?
If you are enrolled in our plan that includes these benefits, your life insurance and ADD&D will terminate when you turn 65. Long term disability coverage will terminate 4 months prior to your 65th birthday.
-
When does my coverage end?
a. Life, LTD and AD&D terminate at age 65 or retirement
b. Health and dental coverage have no termination age
-
What happens to my coverage when I turn 65 or retire form the hospital?
You may continue your health and dental coverage after retirement. However, if you have Basic Life, Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D), or Long-Term Disability (LTD) coverage, you will no longer be eligible for those benefits and must contact the HCP office to make the necessary changes.
a. Health and dental coverage may be continued for life, provided that monthly premiums are paid and kept up to date.
-
What does “actively at work” mean?
In order to be considered actively at work, you must be a hospital employee that is scheduled to work. For example, you are not considered to be actively at work if you are on a disability or maternity leave.
-
What happens if there is a change in my employment status like retirement or reduction in hours?
This is your plan and is not administered by your employer. Therefore, it is your responsibility to notify us of any change to your employment status. Depending on the status change you may no longer be eligible for the basic life, long term disability and accidental death, disease and dismemberment benefits. Please note that changes in coverage will only be made the first of the month following the date our office is notified in writing. Changes in coverage will not be made retroactively.

What is LTD and why do I need it?
Long-Term Disability (LTD) is a type of insurance that replaces a portion of your income if you’re unable to work for an extended period due to illness, injury, or disability. It typically kicks in when your EI ends.
Why you should have it:
Income protection: Your biggest asset is your ability to earn. LTD ensures you can still pay for essentials (rent, mortgage, food) if you can’t work.
Prevents financial stress: Without income, savings can disappear quickly. LTD provides stability during recovery.
Who Is Eligible to Apply: If you are working more than 18 hours per week, under age 65, permanent* part time position or casual employment status
*Permanent - a position with no end date
Our Special Offer for those under age 35
Employees under age 35 who are working more than 18 hours per week are eligible to apply for up to an additional $1000 of long term disability coverage at no cost.
This additional coverage is subject to medical underwriting and is over and above the $1000 of LTD coverage already included with Signature and Supreme.
