Casual hospital employees are typically in precarious situations. They don’t have guaranteed hours. They’re often paid less than their full-time colleagues. And on top of that, they aren’t eligible to join their employers’ group health care benefits plans.

Are you a part-time or casual hospital employee in need of health care benefits? Request a quote today!

With approximately 50 percent of hospital employees being considered casual or part time, this is a large group of the workforce that is forced to pay for health expenses out of pocket. As we’re sure you already know, being uninsured can leave you feeling stressed, financially burdened, and in poorer health.

If you’ve ever sought out individual health insurance, you know that option can be extremely expensive, even for a bare-bones package.

The situation doesn’t have to be so dire, however. There are options available to casual hospital employees like you. Specifically, you can join a comprehensive group health care plan through Health Care Providers (HCP).

Casual Hospital Employees under the Age of 65

If you’re under the age of 65 and are actively working in a hospital for 18 hours or less per week, you qualify to join HCP’s Plan 2. This plan offers extended health care with the option to add on basic or enhanced dental coverage.

The extended health care covers a wide variety of health expenses:

  • prescription drugs
  • out-of-country travel emergency medical services
  • hospital accommodations
  • private duty nursing
  • group one paramedical services (speech therapist, physiotherapist, psychologist)
  • group two paramedical services (podiatrist, chiropodist)
  • group three paramedical services (occupational therapist, dietician, acupuncturist, naturopath, RMT, osteopath, chiropractor)
  • vision care
  • audio care
  • accidental dental
  • medical items
  • emergency transport
  • medical alert bracelets
  • Employee Assistance Program

Plan costs and specific coverage amounts vary based on your coverage level. Your coverage under the Essential levels are guaranteed, regardless of your health status or when you apply. You may also be eligible to receive more comprehensive coverage at no additional cost under the Optimum level by submitting a statement of health.

Casual Hospital Workers over the Age of 65

HCP’s Plan 65+ is the ideal plan for casual workers over the age of 65 actively working in a hospital as well as retired workers over this age. This plan also offers extended health care as well as optional dental care. There are plans that offer prescription drug coverage and those that don’t.

Coverage:

  • Prescription drugs (not included at the Essential level)
  • Out-of-country travel medical services
  • hospital accommodations (applicable at the Complete and Optimum levels only)
  • private duty nursing
  • group one paramedical services (speech therapist, physiotherapist, psychologist)
  • group two paramedical services (podiatrist, chiropodist)
  • group three paramedical services (occupational therapist, dietician, acupuncturist, naturopath, RMT, osteopath, chiropractor)
  • vision care
  • audio care
  • accidental dental
  • medical items
  • emergency transport
  • medical alert bracelets
  • Employee Assistance Program

As with Plan 2, coverage is guaranteed at the Essential levels, regardless of health or when you apply. In addition, you also have the opportunity to be considered for more extensive coverage, at no extra cost, by submitting a completed statement of health form. Costs and amount of coverage vary based on level of coverage.

How It Works

HCP’s health plans are voluntary benefits. They are accessible through the hospital, though employees are directly responsible for choosing their levels of coverage and paying the premiums. Participation is completely voluntary.

Due to group buying power, the premiums could be lower than you would find when shopping for individual health insurance and the benefits are of higher quality as well.

Joining is easy. Find out which plan you’re eligible to join based on your age and hours of work per week, then fill out an application form. Coverage is guaranteed—you do not need to fill in a health questionnaire to be accepted to a plan. So regardless of your medical history, your health needs will be taken care of.
